Magma Labor

The processing of the AnnART Archive takes place in the dedicated research space called Magma Labor, located in the basement of the exhibition space managed by the MAGMA Contemporary Medium Association. The laboratory aims to expand the institutional roles of MAGMA and the Székely National Museum through collaboration between the two institutions: its purpose is to initiate, within a museum framework, the historical processing of contemporary art carried out with scientific rigor. The first research project of Magma Labor is precisely the processing of the AnnART Archive, which also serves as a model for the creation of this workspace: the development of a research infrastructure that includes the reprography and digitization of artworks, the creation of a specialized library, as well as the long-term archiving, in accordance with international standards, of process-based and ephemeral artworks and their related documentation in both analog and digital media. Magma Labor also plays a role in building professional relationships that foster trust with artists, legal heirs, and institutional partners, in order to organize and process personal and institutional fonds and collections – from foundations, publishers, and galleries – thereby facilitating the continuous development of the digital archive and the art collection. Based on these premises, the laboratory aims to carry out research projects which, through broader regional and international institutional collaborations, lead to the creation of research-based publications and exhibitions.
